Before one can leave Avernus, the first layer of Hell, one must pass through a mighty gate of iron. Carved onto this gate in Supernal is the warning:

“Through me you pass into the city of woe:
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
Through me among the people lost for aye.
Justice the founder of my fabric mov’d:
To rear me was the task of power divine,
Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.
Before me things create were none, save things
Eternal, and eternal I endure.
Abandon all hope ye who enter here.”

This passage has come to be known to mortalkind as the Gates of Hell. Beyond it lies the City of Dis, the second layer of Hell. It is named after the archdevil who rules it, Dispater – who holds power with a cautious, calculating hand. The balance of power is always shifting among the devils, but Dispater makes sure that his enemies are always too preoccupied with each other to cause him much grief.

Dispater was responsible for Gith’s imprisonment in Hell, and he was infuriated when she was freed after Zetch’r’r halted the Eternal Crusade. So great was his desire to recapture such a powerful soul that he trusted no one but himself to reclaim her. The Iron Duke sent an aspect of himself to Tu’narath, and with the Emperor’s help he was able to track down her spirit in its new body.

But just as he was to arrange her return to Dis, he was thwarted by the Champions. Legion, in a rare moment of heroism, was able to turn the archdevil’s spiteful magics against him, and before the aspect could escape it was destroyed.

Gith was freed, but now the Champions have likely earned themselves a powerful foe…
